Locksmith hardware

Locksmiths play a significant role. We do not only help people out of difficult situations, we also install, build and repair locks and other safety devices such as vaults and safes.

Woodbridge Locksmiths can also advise you on high quality security devices. Because safety is a growing concern, a locksmith has to keep learning about security tools and keep them up to date.

It is possible to deal with these problems on your own or with some other hardware source, but a locksmith is the most knowledgeable, the most accurate and the most competent.

Woodbridge Locksmiths also gives excellent repair work at a very competitive price, and we keep updating our skills so that we can give our clients the most proficient and trustworthy service in the whole industry.

There are several things to consider when you select locksmith hardware.

Four things to consider before you choose

Hardware is not only a question of price. The door it goes into, the frame behind it and the number of ways into the building all change what the right choice is. These are the four points we go over with customers.

What to look at

Glass doors

Many residential doors with glass and side lights give a potential intruder the chance to reach through broken glass and unlock the door. In some cases owners and handymen fit double sided locks with keyed cylinders inside and out. That can be a dangerous mistake. It is a serious breach of fire and life safety codes, and in some cases that hardware can void your home insurance. In the event of a fire or another emergency, those locks turn the home into a trap.

Rental and resale properties

For anyone planning to sell or rent out a property, it can simply be a matter of installing hardware that meets and operates as set out in modern building codes. Commercial grade 2 locks and hardware usually meet the minimum code requirements and come in a range of functions and finishes. There is a wide selection and various levels of quality. Some UL listed grade 2 products meet the minimum requirement, while other hardware is designed and built to higher standards and will give a longer service life and better protection.

How solid are the doors and frames

In many cases the frame around the door is made of soft wood less than three quarters of an inch thick, shimmed away from the actual structural framing of the wall. Once it is drilled for a lock and a handle, the material left can be as little as three eighths of an inch. Installing the plain strike plate with the short screws that come with most builder grade hardware does little or nothing to stop the door from being forced open.

How many possible points of entry

Securing several doors can be as simple as installing locks keyed alike so they all work with one key, but the other possible points of entry have to be considered as well.
